Liwonde National Park & Lake Malawi (4 days Safari)

Day 1 & 2
– Liwonde National Park

Welcome to Malawi! We begin your adventure with
a comfortable pick-up from your accommodation in Lilongwe and embark on a
scenic journey southward through Dedza towards the
enchanting Liwonde National Park. As we cross the Shire River — the main source
of Malawi’s electricity generation — we enter one of the country’s most
celebrated wildlife havens. Liwonde National Park, a true gem, offers a wealth
of wildlife and natural beauty.

Along the way, enjoy a thrilling game drive as we make our way to
the camp, passing through diverse landscapes that include the serene waters of
Lake Malombe, the winding Shire River, and the expansive eastern upper Shire
Plain. The river teems with thousands of hippos and crocodiles, while the park
is home to several hundred majestic elephants and a variety of antelope
species. Recently introduced black rhinos can also be spotted, adding to the
park’s allure.

The unique blend of riverine terrain, mopane grasslands, and mixed
bushveld makes Liwonde a birdwatcher’s paradise, offering an incredible variety
of birdlife. As time allows, arriving at the camp in time for an afternoon game
drive, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the park’s incredible wildlife
up close from the comfort of an open vehicle safari. An optional boat cruise or
additional game drive are also available.

Day 3 – Cape
Maclear, Lake Malawi

Today, we continue our journey northward
towards stunning Lake Malawi, a breathtaking natural wonder that spans
one-fifth of Malawi’s total landmass. Stretching 575km in length and up to 85km
at its widest point, this vast inland sea covers an impressive 23,000 square km.
Fed by 14 rivers, yet drained by only one—the Shire River—Lake Malawi is a true
marvel of nature. One of its most remarkable features is its incredible
biodiversity, with over 350 species of endemic fish, making it a paradise for
nature lovers.

A lake with a rich and turbulent history, it
has witnessed ancient tribal conflicts, the devastating Arab slave trade, and
even the first naval ‘battle’ and British victory of World War I. Lake Malawi
ranks as the third-largest lake in Africa and the twelfth largest in the world,
reaching depths that make it the fourth deepest lake globally.

Cape Maclear is a popular destination for water
sports enthusiasts. Whether you’re into water-skiing, snorkeling, or kayaking, the
calm waters and sandy shores make it the perfect retreat. With its rocky coves,
tropical fish, and serene atmosphere, this peaceful haven offers a perfect
escape for those seeking both adventure and tranquility by the water.
